Vietnam Festivals
In Hà Tây,
it is worthy to mention festival tour first because it lasts all
the year round. All the festivals bear typical characteristics
of traditional festivals of North delta (Red River) which show the
religious belief or respect of the inhabitants for different gods
and heroes. Each festival can be considered as a living museum containing
culture, traditions of the nation to be represented by different
ceremonies such as statue-bathing, fish-catching, etc. or by folk
games as wrestling, water pulpet, Cheo Singing, Do Singing, cooking
contests, etc.
Some festivals in Hà Tây Province are well known in Vietnam and the world of which Perfume (Hương) Pagoda is the most noteworthy because it is the longest and most interesting, attracting about half a million visitors every year. Next attention should be paid to Do Singing Festival in Quocoai district which is only organised once in the every 36 years; Chinese Cheo Singing Festival being performed once in every 30 years; Other famous festivals are Thay pagoda festival, Kite-Flying festival in Bagiang- Danphuong, Tayphuong Pagoda festival, Dau Pagoda festival, Va temple festival, Hatmon temple festival.
Trang Temple- Nquyen Binh Khiem Festival
Time: 28th day of the eleventh lunar month.
Place: Trung Am Hamlet, Ly Hoc Commune, Vinh Bao District,Haiphong City.
Objects of worship: Doctorate Nguyen Binh Khiem.
Characteristics: A solemn sacrifices-offering ceremony in commemorating Doctorate Nguyen Binh Khiem takes place in the relics of. This is a big cultural event in Haiphong City and it attracts great numbers of visitors.
An Xa Village Featival
Time: The 1st day of the twelfth lunar month.
Place: An Xa Village, Toan Thang Commune, Kim Dong District, Hung Yen Province.
Objects of worship: Village's tutelary god Anh Lang - Duc Van Royal Highest in the reign of Hung Due Vuong who had merit of helping people in the region to escape famine.
Characteristics: Ceremony of recalling the embodied day of the An Xa village's tutelary god.
Duong Phuc Festival
Time: 16th day of the eleventh lunar month.
Place: Kim Dong District, Hung Yen Province.
Objects of worship:Village's tutelary god Trinh Phuc Tu Hoa Doan Trang Thanh Mau Royal Highest who died but always appear with supernatural power in helping villagers to avoid robbery danger.
Characteristics: Commemoration of the embodied day of the village's tutelary god.
Kim Dang Festival
Time: The 17th day of the eleventh lunar month.
Place: Kim Dong District, Hung Yen Province.
Objects of worship: Village's tutelary god - Te The Ho Quoc, and his wife Moi Nuong Trinh Thuc, who assisted Dinh Tien Hoang in quelling 12 vassals.
Characteristics: Commemoration of the embodied day of the village's tutelary god.
Minh Tap Commune Festival
Time: The 2nd day of the eleventh lunar month.
Place: Khoai Chau District, Hung Yen Province.
Objects of worship: Village's tutelary god - Uy Muc Oai Linh Dai Vuong (in the reign of Hung Due Vuong) who had merit of fighting Thuc troops and his soul always appear with great power in helping King Ly Nam De fight against drought and give famine relief for people.
Lai Tao Village Festival
Time: The 12th day of the tenth lunar month.
Place: Bot Xuyen Commune, My Duc District, Ha Tay Province.
Objects of worship: Village's tutelary gods - 3 brothers of Cao family, generals of Hai Ba Trung.
Characteristics: The feast which worship to tutelary god includes uncooked pork and glutinous rice.
Nhi Khe Village Festival
Time: The 25th day of the tenth lunar month.
Place: Nhi Khe Commune, Thuong Tin District, Ha Tay Province.
Objects of worship: Mr. Doan Van Tai, the ancestor of wood carving in the 16th century.
Characteristics: Worshipping the ancestor, sacrifice-offering ceremony, offering to the ancestor, chess playing, and cheo singing.
Trung Do Worshipping Festival
Time: 18th day of the eleventh lunar month.
Place: Ngoc Phan Village, Thanh Oai District, Ha Tay Province.
Objects of worship: King Ly Nam De.
Characteristics: Worshipping, prayers, phet playing.
An Co Village Festival
Time: The 15th day of the eleventh lunar month.
Place: Thuy An Commune, Thai Thuy District, Thai Binh Province.
Objects of worship: Village's tutelary god - Nam Hai Dai Vuong - Pham Hai who had merit of encouraging people produce, protecting crops, excluding natural calamity, epidemic diseases.
Characteristics: Procession of tutelary god, sacrifices-offering ceremony (24 worshipping people wear felt hats, mandarin's boots, armour with specific ceremonies), chess playing, wrestling and cheo singing in the yard of communal house.
Lo Khe Festival
Time: 5th to the 7th day of the fourth lunar month and the 13th to the 15th day of the eleventh lunar month.
Place: Lien Ha Commune, Dong Anh District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Mr. Dinh Du and his wife, Mrs. Man Hoa Duong (taught a dào singing).
Characteristics: Ancestor of ca trù 's death anniversary with sacrifice-offering ceremony and singing, dancing.
Manh Tan Village Festival
Time: 10th day of the eleventh lunar month.
Place: Manh Tan Hamlet, Thuy Lam Commune, Dong Anh District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Duong Giang, Ly trieu Quoc Mau (mother of the country of Ly Dynasty).
Characteristics: Palanquin procession, sacrifices-offering ceremony, traditional wrestling.
Tu Lien Festival
Time: 12th day of the tenth lunar month.
Place: Tu Lien Ward, Tay Ho District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Bao Trung, Minh Khiet, Uy Hanh and Mai Hoa.
Characteristics: Procession of palanquin, dragon dance.
Ky Yen Festival at Nquyen tri Phuong Temple
Time: From the 16th to the 17th day of the tenth lunar month.
Place: Nguyen Tri Phuong Temple, Buu Hoa Ward, Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai Province.
Characteristics: Tien hien, Hau hien worshipping, procession of god, offering to worship god, tong on ceremony, boi singing, dancing.
Phu Le Communal House Festival
Time: From the 18th to the 19th day of the third lunar month (Ky Yen Festival) and the 9th to the 10th day of the eleventh lunar month (Cau Bong Festival)
Place: Phu Khuong Hamlet, Phu Le Commune, Ba Tri District, Ben Tre Province.
Objects of worship: The village's tutelary god.
Characteristics: Ky Yen festival: praying for good weather, Cau Bong festival: praying for good crops, god honour-conferring diploma procession, worshipping Tien hien, Hau hien (sages of former time who breaking ground and opening rice paddies), boi singing.
